In 2012 I carried a large medium format camera around the South Island of New Zealand. The aim was to take B&W photographs in the cumbersome, old-fashioned way, experiencing the traditional implications and wonder of chemical-mechanical vision. I subsequently produced custom software to render the processed still images as a grid of algorithmic drawing elements. This provided, unexpectedly, a means of lending a curious temporal dimension to the still photographs. By animating the grid squares, my photographs came alive – or better, were rendered as undead sequences of pixelated video. I have recently returned to this project now that affordable projector technology has sufficient resolution to display this work.
